Creating a Linux Partition with Partition Magic
When your system reboots, you immediately start the Partition Magic program as
shown in Figure 9.
FIGURE 9. This Partition Magic screen displays the size of your Windows
partition.
CAUTION: If your Windows hard disk is quite full, you can-
not use PartitionMagic to create a partition for OpenLinux.
You must have free space on your Windows hard disk that can
be used to install Linux.
This dialog box enables you to reduce the size of your current Windows partition,
freeing up space for a new Linux partition. The area labeled “Drive info for
selected partition” indicates which partition will be altered. This should refer to
your Windows partition.
If you need to alter a different Windows partition, such as a Windows partition on
another hard disk or space not currently assigned to a partition (free space),
choose Select Partition. A dialog box appears where you can select the hard disk
and partition on the disk you want to alter to create free space for OpenLinux.
The area labeled “Size info for selected partition” indicates how Partition Magic
will alter the existing partition. This area includes several fields:
•
Size MB: The total size of the existing partition (space available).
•
Used MB: The amount of space used by files in Windows.
•
Free MB: The free space on the Windows partition.
These three lines have two columns: Before Resize and After Resize. The value
of these numbers shows you how much free space will be available to you after
resizing the Windows Partition.
